LGBT+ Labour isn't working... it's time for an alternative

As a brand-new movement, we need your help

In the last few days, the new Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, has said that the Government will adopt the recommendations made in the controversial Cass Review. The review inspired a blanket ban on puberty blockers for young people which was implemented under the last Conservative Government.

Sadly, LGBT+ Labour failed to release any statement in a timely manner. When they eventually released something, it was an open letter which failed to call for the ban to be lifted. For too long, LGBT+ Labour as a movement has stood on the side-lines whilst our party has made decisions and comments that were not in the best interests of of the LGBTQIA+ community. Now, it’s time for change.

Presumably worried about optics, or “working with the party behind the scenes”, the movement has been a poor advocate for individuals within our community, and we deserve better. The Labour Party in Government is a remarkable opportunity to make meaningful and long-lasting change. The party has led the way for LGBTQIA+ in the past with the Equality Act in 2010, and the ground-breaking Gender Recognition Act in 2004.

Sadly, LGBT+ Labour is not fit to demand those changes and they have failed to represent their members properly. Other issues with the movement are:

  • The concerning lack of accountability within the Labour Party and a deafening silence throughout the polarising debate on transgender people

  • A worryingly poor level of communication with their members, often leaving them out of the loop and in the dark with the latest news

  • Extremely inaccessible events which are usually held down south, meaning people in the north are ostracised from the movement

So, what next? Get involved! Your support is immensely important. We are a brand-new movement and we desperately need your support.
