We are calling on the Government to lift the ban on puberty blockers immediately
In response to the announcement by Wes Streeting to maintain the blanket ban on puberty blockers for young people, Pride in Labour is urging the Government to urgently reconsider. It is clear that puberty blockers are an important part of healthcare for many transgender young people, and this ban poses significant risks to their mental and physical health. It undermines their right to access essential medical care, which will have consequences.
The decision to ban puberty blockers, based on the flawed Cass Review highlights the need for a fresh evaluation. That is why we believe a new review should be conducted by this new Government. Any review conducted into trans health care should be led by the lived experience of transgender people.
We recognise that reviews into aspects of health care, particularly those concerning medication, should have expert input. But nobody is more expert in matters that affect transgender people than transgender people themselves.
We urge the Government to listen to the voices of transgender individuals and medical professionals who understand the profound impact of these healthcare decisions. The Government must create policies that prioritise the wellbeing and rights of young transgender people, allowing them access to the medical care that they need and deserve.
Pride in Labour stands firm in its commitment to advocate for the rights and health of transgender youth, and we call on the Government to lift the blanket ban on puberty blockers immediately. The lives and futures of these young people depend on the decisions made by the Labour Party.
